Dr. N. Lee Morris, a cherished son of Florence, was born in the historic McLeod Infirmary and devoted his life to serving his community. A proud graduate of the University of South Carolina and the Medical College of Georgia, he practiced medicine with unwavering dedication for nearly forty years. His leadership as former chief of medical staff at Florence General Hospital, now MUSC, left an indelible mark on the region’s healthcare.
A man of profound intellect and curiosity, Dr. Morris was an avid reader from a young age. His wife, Sandra, fondly recalls how he would pedal to the local library on his bicycle, often with friends in tow, eager to explore its treasures. His passion for literature, particularly Japanese Haiku, and his love for classical music enriched his life and inspired those around him.
Dr. Morris passed away in 2009, but his legacy endures through the generosity of his wife, Sandra, whose heartfelt donation brought the Dr. N. Lee Morris Gallery to life at the library in October 2011. This vibrant space, named in his honor, continues to celebrate his love for art and literature by showcasing the works of local talent and creative artists, ensuring his spirit shines brightly year after year.
The Morris Gallery receives continuing support from the Friends of Florence County Library.
