The grand opening of Robert Garey’s art exhibition at the Dr. N. Lee Morris Gallery was a vibrant and unforgettable evening, filled with a quiet buzz of excitement. A diverse crowd of art enthusiasts, creators, and curious locals mingled throughout the night, their conversations weaving a tapestry of admiration for Garey’s breathtaking works. His paintings, alive with bold colors and intricate textures, adorned the walls, each piece inviting viewers into a world of emotion and imagination. Known for his intimate portraits, the collection captivated attendees who were smiling and celebratory.
Robert Garey has local ties, as he grew up in Florence and graduated from McClenaghan High School in 1971. He attended art classes at Francis Marion College, studying under Steven Gately. Garey moved to New York City in 1986 and lived there for twenty six years, studying at the Art Students League and at the New York Academy of Art, where he earned his MFA in painting. Along with studying and maintaining a fine art studio, he worked as a freelance muralist. Eventually, Garey and another artist, Dianne Warner, established a large commercial mural studio. He also painted custom sign and gold leaf work for businesses.
Upon returning to Florence in 2011, Garey established a local studio, and continued painting in fine art, portraits, sign painting, and mural work. His most recent mural work is the commission for the large narrative mural located in the lobby of the Florence Judicial Center. It consists of three panels showing different time periods of the establishment of the judiciary in the Pee Dee.
The exhibition will remain open for public viewing until September 19, 2025, offering ample time to experience Garey’s stunning artistry. Visitation to the Dr. N. Lee Morris Art Gallery on the second floor of Florence County Library is free and open to the public during normal operating hours:
