Goodreads summary

I picked up this book because I loved the artwork on the cover done by Nina Mata. It is colorful, but has a calm element to it. I was also encouraged by many of our younger patrons to give Renee Watson’s books a chance. Our younger patrons have told me that her books helped them feel seen by being able to relate to the characters and events happening throughout the book. Many could relate to the feelings that the main character, Ryan, was expressing throughout her story.

Ryan Hart had major plans for the summer, however, her mother is expecting a new baby and her plans have to change despite her reluctance. She was excited for a little sister, but now she is hating it because everything has to revolve around how her mother feels. As an older sibling myself, I understand the feeling of being so excited for my sibling to come, but did not like that my plans of play and fun had to be interrupted. Ryan also has to work through her difficulties at her first sleepaway camp, while also dealing with friendship problems. She has a lot on her plate and will have to learn patience when it comes to the people and things she loves.

I completely understand what Ryan is going through and the requirement of learning how to be patient with the ones you love. I had to be patient, understanding and supportive when my mother was pregnant with my sibling. I also had to learn to be patient when it came to my friends in school, when we would have our own rough patches. I believe this book would be great for anyone that is dealing with similar issues and wants to feel seen and heard. Will you learn to grow your love and come visit your friends at the Florence County Library to read Ways To Grow Love
