Thoughts:
What made me pick up this book? I have heard about this book from a few of my friends and coworkers, so I decided to give it a try. I was hooked by the time I got a few pages into it. The illustrations alone could capture anyone's attention. The illustrations make the book have a colorful, but calm, and sort of spooky vibe. It would be a great cozy book to read around fall and Halloween without having a jump scare or anything.
Marjorie is such a strong character for the story to follow. She has so many responsibilities for a 13 year old girl to deal with, which is a sad reality for many teenagers. She has to deal with the passing of her mother, which weighs heavily on her and her father. She tries so hard to keep her family’s laundromat a float, while also dealing with bullying at school and from the town patrons. It takes her meeting a ghost to feel like she has someone to relate to. This book is a good way for teenagers to feel like they are seen and heard when they are dealing with so much in their lives.
My favorite character from the whole book has to be Wendell. He is so curious and playful, and his character design adds to the fun of it all. I love the part where he sees there is red dye poured into Marjorie’s laundry detergent and he tries to pour the laundry detergent down the sink, but it spills all over him. The dye turns him red and I relate to that whole incident because I am often spilling, dropping, and breaking anything I get my hands on. Wendall is just a lovable and curious character that a reader could enjoy at any time in the series. I recommend this series for Wendall alone.
