Several FCLS employees joined librarians from across the state at the SCLA 2025 conference. This was the 110th annual conference, and the theme was The Power of Us: Libraries in Action. Over three transformative days, we immersed ourselves in dynamic workshops, thought-provoking presentations, and insightful poster sessions designed to foster collaboration and ignite innovation in library services. For instance, we gained practical strategies on how South Carolina librarians are expanding outreach through community pantries; mastered tips and tricks in marketing and digital resource management; learned to create more inclusive programming; and explored ways to become stronger leaders. Library vendors were also on hand, showcasing cutting-edge tools and technologies that enhance efficiency and elevate our work.
Standout moments included the screening of the documentary The Librarians, which offered a deeply emotional tribute to the sacrifices made by library professionals to keep banned books on the shelves, and an inspiring author talk by USC coach Dawn Staley. Drawing from her three-year journey writing Uncommon Favor, Coach Staley shared powerful insights on leadership, resilience, and teamwork that resonated profoundly with the library community’s mission-driven spirit.
Our own marketing librarian presented a poster session titled Library Marketing for Beginners, highlighting strategies that helped FCLS increase its social media presence by 54% in one year. Additionally, our Youth Services Coordinator, Paula Childers, was honored for 35 years of outstanding service. Paula has not only enriched the lives of children and families throughout Florence County but has also served as a shining example and mentor to countless emerging librarians.
Attending a conference like SCLA 2025 provided an invaluable opportunity to step beyond daily routines and connect with like-minded professionals who share a deep commitment to service, learning, and community impact. The collective energy of peers who truly understand our calling left us reinvigorated and reaffirmed our place within a larger, purpose-driven network. Together, as librarians, we are POWERFUL!
