I picked up this book because my attention was drawn to the art style by Isadora Zeffrino on the cover. The art style is cute and colorful; however, it doesn't overwhelm you while reading. The characters are drawn simply, but still have distinct characteristics and personalities. The art style does an excellent job at keeping the reader’s attention as the story progresses. Evan Horowitz is a 17-year-old Instagram star and is well known for playing the role of matchmaker. However, he faces many challenges with having to do with putting his friends before himself, while also possibly losing his chance at love.
My favorite character is Natalia. She is a new student at the same school Evan attends, and he immediately tries to help her find a boyfriend and “fit in” with the other students. She is shy and sweet, loves anime, and is cute as a button. She just wants a romance connection of her own, but this starts drama among her friend group due to Evan. I love her minimalist style, but she also takes an interest in Evan’s makeup skills.
Overall, I liked the book. I do agree with many that this modern-day retelling of Jane Austen's classic novel, Emma, is worthy of a recommendation. The art style and the story complement each other very well, and do a great job of keeping the reader invested in the story and the characters. I love that this book not only focuses on romance in the couple form, but also talks about the love we have within our friendships. It is a great, cozy graphic novel for anyone who is looking for a heartwarming story for February. I hope your heart tells you to visit the Florence County Library System and check out Mismatched by Anne Camlin.
