I picked up this book because I have always admired Ruby Bridges and her efforts to help improve the education system at the age of six. I was further interested in the picture book when I realized that November 14th will be the 65th anniversary of the day Ruby Bridges walked into the school as the first African American student there. A pivotal moment in American history at William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana, during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis, is captured in just a few pages, accompanied by colorful illustrations of that moment.
The art style of this book will draw you in immediately. The illustrations are like roughly painted pictures, but also incredibly detailed at the same time. It is full of bright colors that I think highlight Bridge’s hopes for the future and enthusiasm. The illustrations alone will grab your attention and keep it as you read and learn from the woman herself. I recommend this picture book for any young child or adult who wants to learn about this amazing and inspirational woman, so I ask you to walk your way up our steps and check out the story of Ruby Bridges.
