Thoughts:
What made me pick this book up and read it? I have always been a fan of creatures of the night, and since I work in a library, this book combined two of my interests. The illustrations alone will capture anyone's attention; they are realistic and beautiful, which makes this a great picture book for older elementary students. The book features numerous small details about the bats' travel and adventures in and around the library. There are also references to many different stories and books everyone is familiar with, such as The Lord of the Rings, Alice in Wonderland, Winnie the Pooh, etc... The actual writing of the book is very simple and easy to understand for children. The book also has a bunch of simple rhyming phrases.
My favorite moment in the book was when all the bats gathered around and had their own little story times. It reminded me so much of the Florence County Library’s own story times and seeing all the children get involved with the story, as the bats were doing. This book is a great way to encourage children to visit the library and explore everything it has to offer. So, I ask you, dear reader, will your little bat fly to the library this fall for Bats at the Library?
