Branch and Title: Timmonsville Assistant Branch manager

Work History:  April 1st will be 13 years with FCLS

Favorite book or favorite genre of books: I don't have just one favorite book. I have so many that I love. The 1st series that I devoured as an adult was the Outlander series. Historical Fiction is what I am typically drawn to.

What initially drew you to your field, and how has that passion evolved over time?

Honestly, I was just looking for part time work that wasn't too stressful. I grew up in the library and absolutely loved to read. So it was kind of a natural fit for me. What I did not realize was how this part time position would turn into a career that I love and has been such a blessing for me. I went from a 15hr/week employee to Asst. Manager that gets to do outreach programming with the Boys and Girls Club, the Seniors and wherever else I can. Of course, I also try to acquire grants that can benefit our community.

What was your dream job as a child, and how does it compare to your current role?

Growing up I wanted to be a lawyer or a chef. I was always so torn between the two. Cooking has been my passion since I was 8 years old, but I also wanted to be able to be a voice for the people. I wanted to be able to help people no matter what I was doing. Even though I do not have the professional title of lawyer or chef I am both of these in a way. I am a Chef to my family and whoever needs a hot meal. In my elected position, I am able to work with the laws. As Assistant manager, I am able to do programming and work towards providing programming that deals with each of these fields, but ultimately I am helping people get the information that they need to succeed in their endeavor. So, I really am doing what I always wanted to do when I grew up....helping others.

What do you wish people knew about working in a library?

Libraries are not just about books. We, no matter our role, are here to help people. That can be in the form of entertainment through programming, reading or watching something. It can also be knowledge through research using books, magazines, or the internet. Let us not forget that we can also fax, make copies and help you figure out how to work that computer or cell phone that wants to be difficult. Maybe the best part is the fact that you can sit back and relax. Libraries are the community and sometimes we can become part of the family.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Do not ever give up on your dreams. You can do anything that you put your mind and heart into. (I tell this to every child that I can.)
