In 2001 construction on the new Lake City Library was completed. The Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation donated $250,000 and additional money came from county funding as well as other donors. This was the first new library construction project in Florence County in 76 years.

In 2003, The Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation granted the Florence Library $10,635,000, matched by the county, to erect a 17 million dollar building for the new Florence County Library Headquarters. Now known as The Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library, this facility is South Carolina’s eminent public library.

That same year, with a small gift of $30,000 from the original Friends group, the re-energized Friends of Florence County Library raised $658,000. Grants for books and materials toward the library’s Opening Day Collection were $350,000. The balance of funds was used to establish an endowment that currently stands at $488,000. It is our goal to reach $1 million in order to continue dispersing sizable donations on an annual basis for the library’s needs.

In 2008 the Dozier M. Munn Pamplico Public Library was opened. This $2.2 million facility was completed with a $1,600,000 grant from the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation and matching money from the county.

Also in 2008, the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation committed an additional $1 million each for a new Timmonsville and Olanta library. Land was purchased and donated for both of these and construction was completed in the first quarter of 2010. The Baker Memorial Public Library (Timmonsville) and Dr. John M. Thomason Public Library (Olanta) are now open and providing local citizens with expanded services and larger facilities.

The new Johnsonville library opened in June 2010. This sixth new library facility brings expanded library services to all of the communities of Florence County.
