The Friends of the Florence County Library 2006 Annual Report
- The Joe Stukes History Series Update
- January - Alston Purvis, Florence native and author of The Vendetta: FBI Hero Melvin Purvis’s War against Crime and J. Edgar Hoover’s War against Him, spoke at the Annual Meeting.
- March - Award-winning, best selling author of Clover, Her Own Place, Dori Sanders Country Cooking: Recipes and Stories from the Family Farm Stand, and Promise Land: A Farmer Remembers, Dori Sanders, how she became inspired to write her books.
- April - For National Library Week, Dr. Stukes portrayed Mozart, accompanied by the Firenze Quartet. Also that month, Stukes presented Teddy Roosevelt, and, in a later program, his nemesis, Woodrow Wilson.
- September - Dan Carter, Emmy Award winning author, spoke on Presidential Leadership. Dr. Stukes’ narrative characters for the month were Herbert Hoover and Paul Robeson with Clay Brown singing spirituals of the day.
- November - Dr. Stukes made an appearance by General MacArthur; guest speaker, Walter Edgar, editor of the South Carolina Encyclopedia signed books after speaking about how the encyclopedia was compiled.
The Friends of Florence County Library are delighted to announce the continued collaboration with First Federal to help fund the ever-popular Joe Stukes History Series. These programs have seen an average attendance of 140 for each program in 2006. First Federal has pledged a generous contribution to help ensure this excellent program will continue.
- Author Appearances, Events and Programs:
- March to May
- The Friends and Humanities Council South Carolina sponsored Let’s Talk About It, a book discussion series called "I Love a Mystery."
- April
- For National Library Week, the Friends hosted a Poetry Workshop with local and Francis Marion University poets. With a generous donation by the the Greenberg family, the Friends engaged the Grey Seals Bathtub Pirates to perform a puppet show for 200 children.
- May
- Paula Millen, Executive Director for the Humanities Council South Carolina, presented "Are You Booked for Summer."
- August
- David White, author of Bitter Ocean: Battle of the Atlantic 1939-1945, spoke about his book on Merchant Marine ships in World War II.
- October
- Sara Ellington and Stephanie Triplett, gave an entertaining program at our annual Morning Coffee about how their book, The Mommy Chronicles: Conversations Sharing the Comedy and Drama of Pregnancy and New Motherhood, was written as an e-mail correspondence between the two women.
- November
- Colonel Barry Wingard spoke about his tour of duty in Afghanistan after an introduction by Dr. Scott Kaufman, FMU history professor, who enlightened the audience about the country’s current political situation.
- December
- Nine Local Authors signed their books at The Christmas Drop-In. The festive holiday decorations for the library were provided the Friends and the Florence Garden Council.
- Fund Raisers:
- May - The New York Times bestselling author, Janet Evanovich, delighted her audience with a presentation about her lively characters after signing books for her many fans.
- October - The Friends hosted Corks and Canvas wine tasting with Morning News and the FMU Arts Department. Later that month, authors Josephine Humphreys, Mary Alice Monroe and Marjory Wentworth spoke about their writing and work at the Low Country Ladies of Fiction luncheon that was hosted in conjunction with The McLeod Health Foundation.
- Advocacy Campaign:
- June - On the second anniversary of the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library, the Friends of Florence County Library launched a Sustaining Donor campaign in order to increase the library endowment, currently at $325,000, to 1 million dollars. Investments from this fund will provide the library ample means to purchase necessary books and other materials for an ever-growing collection that serves over 100,000 library patrons.

- Throughout 2006, the Friends provided financial support for the Children’s Summer Reading Program, the Children’s Fall Festival, a weekly family movie and international film series, as well as a variety of seasonal programs.
- State Awards:
- September - The Friends of South Carolina Libraries award for Best Business was given to Piggly Wiggly for donating $10,000.
- Meetings:
- March - The Friends attended Library Legislative Day in Columbia.
- October - Francie Dunlap, member at large to the Friends of South Carolina Libraries Board, attended the FOSCL Annual Meeting.
- Publications:
- The Friends publish a quarterly newsletter, Among Friends, and notify all members about upcoming events with letters and postcards.
